Stone Fortress, Yeosu is a square fortification built on flat land, rather than on a mountainous or hill-and-plain site of the kind more commonly used in the mid-15th century of the Joseon period. Two rounds of excavation and academic symposiums have clarified the character of the site. It began as a seokbo (a fortress built of stone) focused on military defence, then gradually came to serve other functions, including as a government storehouse for stockpiling supplies and as a jangsi (market), which makes it a site of particular interest for its varied character. In addition, the main body of the fortress wall and the surrounding moat survive in good condition. As an army jinbo (a small fortress garrisoned by the local military units that defended each region) built in square form on flat land in the mid-15th century, it shows features rarely found in other fortresses across its full extent — a foundation course laid using an upright-slab technique, and the use of large foundation stones — giving it a rare and valuable character specific to its period.
