Chuseongsanseong Fortress, in Jeungpyeong County, North Chungcheong Province, is the largest earthen mountain fortress from the Hanseong Baekje period found anywhere in the provinces. It has a unique layout consisting of a south fortress and a north fortress, each with a double structure of inner and outer walls, and was built using early-stage rammed-earth (pandeuk) techniques together with layered earth compaction. It shows the developmental stages of gate and sluice-gate construction characteristic of the Hanseong Baekje period, and its varied excavated artefacts allow insight into the international situation of the time. The well-preserved state of the fortress walls also gives it important academic value for research into the characteristics and construction techniques of Hanseong Baekje mountain fortresses.
