The embankment in Yaksa-dong, Ulsan, was built using two hills to dam a river with an abundant flow of water. Radiocarbon dating of tree branches found within the earthen fill layers suggests that it was constructed for water storage in the late Three Kingdoms period or the early Unified Silla period (sixth to seventh centuries). The embankment is estimated to have been about 155m long overall. The surviving earthen mound is 8-12m wide, the surviving embankment site is 25-37m wide, and the surviving height of the embankment is 4.5-8m, with a trapezoidal cross-section. The embankment was built on a prepared foundation covered with a highly viscous silt layer and shells, and its earthen fill was raised using the buyeop technique, a method employing thin, leafy branches laid in layers to strengthen the soil. This clearly demonstrates ancient civil engineering technology, making the site an important one of great historical and academic conservation value.
