Nogangseowon Confucian Academy in Nonsan was established in 1675, the first year of King Sukjong, to honour the scholarship and virtuous conduct of Yun Hwang (pen name Palsong, 1571–1639), a civil official of the mid-Joseon period, and to provide Confucian education for local people. It received an officially bestowed name plaque in 1682, the eighth year of King Sukjong, and enshrines the spirit tablets of Yun Hwang together with Yun Mun-geo (1606–1672), Yun Seon-geo (1610–1669) and Yun Jeung (1629–1711), leading figures of the Soron faction in the Chungcheong-do region. Although Heungseon Daewongun ordered the closure of Confucian academies in 1871, Nogangseowon was not demolished, and it has occupied the same site for some 350 years since its founding. Its lecture hall in particular, which shows the character of Confucian architecture in this region at the end of the 17th century, was designated a treasure in 2011. Following the 'school in front, shrine behind' layout, the academy sets its outer gate, lecture hall and shrine along its central axis, with the students' dormitories, the east chamber and west chamber, facing each other symmetrically — a fine example of the seowon architecture typical of the central region.
