Two precise surface surveys, conducted in 2005 and 2013, confirmed that some 275 Baekje-period tombs are distributed within a 2 km radius of Yeongwon-myeon, Jeongeup; among these, 56 Baekje-period stone-chamber tombs with a corridor entrance, concentrated in Eunseon-ri, Yeongwon-myeon and Dogye-ri, Deokcheon-myeon, were designated a Historic Site. The Ancient Tombs in Eunseon-ri and Dogye-ri, Jeongeup form the largest group of Baekje tombs discovered to date in Jeollabuk-do. The stone chamber with a corridor entrance is a representative Baekje tomb type, and the tombs here clearly show the expansion of Baekje's territory into this region. Most date to Baekje's Sabi period, but some are presumed to have been built during the earlier Ungjin period, making it possible to trace how Baekje's corridor-entrance stone-chamber tombs changed from the Ungjin period to the Sabi period. The tombs are presumed to be the burial grounds of local elites of the Baekje period, and considered together with the nearby Gosaburiseong Fortress, Jeongeup (Historic Site), the Mahan-style mounded tombs in the vicinity, and Jungbang, one of Baekje's five regional administrative centres, they provide important material for research into relations between Baekje's central government and its regions, its external relations, and shifts among its political powers.
