Garden Site in Guhwang-dong, Gyeongju
경주 구황동 원지 유적 일원 · 慶州 九黃洞 園池 遺蹟 一圓

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Garden Site in Guhwang-dong, Gyeongju was originally selected as the site for an exhibition hall related to the Hwangnyongsa Temple Site, Gyeongju. During a trial excavation in 1999, remains of the Unified Silla period — a stone structure, a wall, and a well — were identified, and further excavation up to 2004 revealed a wonji, a garden centred on a pond. The wonji has two artificial islands, one large and one small, at its centre, surrounded by an inlet channel, a drainage channel, building sites, walls, and embankments, all arranged in harmony. The various artefacts recovered also make it possible to establish when the garden was built, how it changed over time, and how its spaces were laid out, making it important material for research into Unified Silla garden design. The Guhwang-dong garden site is a rare example, being the third Silla royal-capital wonji site — after Donggung and Wolji and the Yonggang-dong wonji site — for which the period of construction, scale, and internal structure have been confirmed.
