Located in Odaesan Mountain, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province, this valley owes its beautiful scenery to the mountain being eroded and the valley deepened over a long period of time. Its original name was Cheonghaksan Mountain, but Yulgok Yi I is said to have called it Sogeumgang, meaning 'little Geumgangsan', because its scenery resembled that of Geumgangsan Mountain. Here, arranged like a painting, are Amisanseong Fortress — where Crown Prince Maui of Silla is said to have lived 1,000 years ago — along with Guryong Pond, Bibong Falls, Mureunggye Valley, Baengmabong Peak, Ongnyudong Valley, Sikdangam Rock, Manmulsang Rocks and Seonnyeotang Pool. A great variety of plants, 129 species in all, grow wild here, including pine, oriental cork oak, birch and royal azalea, and in particular a rare fern called jomgosari, seldom found elsewhere, grows naturally. Endangered animals such as the long-tailed goral, musk deer and Asiatic black bear also live here, and the black woodpecker can be found as well.
