Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krBaekdo consists of 39 uninhabited islands located about 28 km from Geomundo Island. Mysterious, ancient-looking rock cliffs and fine trees blend with the blue sea to create a unique scenery. It is the centre of the Geomundo fishing grounds, famous for yellow croaker, hairtail, sea bream and brown croaker, and it is home to more than 30 species of birds — including the bush warbler, Japanese white-eye, black wood pigeon and jangbaksae — along with valuable subtropical plants such as the wind orchid (pungnan), the jangsuran orchid and the dangchaesonghwa stonecrop. Sangbaekdo has Byeongpungbawi Rock, Hyeongjebawi Rock, Maebawi Rock, Ori Island, Nojeok Island and Tanggeundae, while Habaekdo to the south has Seobangbawi Rock, Gaksibawi Rock and Gungseongbawi Rock. The Baekdo area, beautiful enough to be called the Haegeumgang — the 'sea Geumgangsan' — of the South Sea, is also part of the Dadohae Marine National Park, and both its land and part of its sea areas are designated as a Scenic Site for natural heritage protection; public access is restricted to preserve this natural heritage. However, entry is permitted for management or academic purposes with the approval of the Administrator of the Korea Heritage Service.
