Dumujin Coast on Baengnyeongdo Island, Ongjin
옹진 백령도 두무진 · 甕津 白翎島 頭武津

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krBaengnyeongdo Island lies at the north-westernmost point of South Korea and is the country's 14th largest island. The harbour on its north-west side is Dumujin, so named because its many pointed rocks form shapes resembling the head of a general. At Dumujin, screen-like sheer coastal cliffs shaped by waves over hundreds of millions of years rise up alongside oddly shaped rocks of every kind. On rock faces 30–40 m high grows the sea chrysanthemum, and along the coast are salt-tolerant plants such as the dokkaebigobi fern, gaetbangpung, ttangchaesonghwa and gaetjilgyeongi, while the leopard lily grows in the crevices of large rocks. Rocks of every shape — Elephant Rock, General Rock, Sinseondae ('Immortals' Terrace'), Seondae Rock, Brothers Rock and more — stand in a row facing the sea, as though combining the strange rocks of Hongdo Island in South Jeolla Province with Taejongdae in Busan. During the reign of King Gwanghaegun of Joseon, Yi Daegi praised Seondae Rock in his Baengnyeongji, a local gazetteer, as 'the old gods' final masterpiece'.
