Maisan Mountain (馬耳山, 'Horse Ears Mountain') is named for the two summit peaks that resemble a horse's ears: Ammaibong (686.0 m), the 'female horse-ear peak', and Summaibong (679.9 m), the 'male horse-ear peak'. Scattered across the mountain are around ten smaller tower- or dome-shaped peaks standing in a row, known as Gwangdaebong, Madubong, Gwanambong, Biryongdae and Naongam. This central part of Maisan Mountain is a natural heritage site notable both for its unusual geological resources and for its scenery in its own right. The mountain is made of Maisan Conglomerate from the Cretaceous period, and its overall shape is characterised by a tower-like upward thrust. Because of the nature of the rock, its surface is pitted with numerous hollows worn away by wind and rain (weathering pits, or tafoni), giving the site great value for petrological research. These hollows were widened as water seeping into small cracks in the rock repeatedly froze and thawed, a process known as frost wedging. Maisan Mountain also brings together a rich array of natural and cultural heritage, including a colony of julsacheolnamu (Euonymus fortunei, a climbing evergreen shrub) designated a Natural Monument, a cheongsilbae (a Korean pear species) tree at Eunsusa Temple, and the Maisan stone pagodas (Maisantap), designated a Provincial Monument.
