Eorayeon Meandering Stream and Surroundings, Yeongwol
영월 어라연 일원 · 寧越 魚羅淵 一圓

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Eorayeon area of the Donggang River displays a great variety of river landforms. These include incised meanders (where the plain through which the river once flowed rose to become a plateau, deepening the river's course), vertical cliffs and gorges, the old watercourses of Sangseonam, Jungseonam and Haseonam, pools, shoals and rapids. Together with the vegetation that has developed across the river, its rock beds and the surrounding forest, and cultural elements such as Jeong Seon Arirang, these combine to create a scenery of exceptional, heaven-given beauty. The plant life is especially varied. Reed grass, thistle, common reed, pinks and chickweed grow on the riverbed, while large colonies of daylily, giant daylily and bramble cover the riverbanks, alongside stands of purple willow, basket willow, giant willow, Hemiptelea davidii and Siberian elm. Pine trees are abundant on the surrounding mountains, and the colonies of boxwood, Siberian elm and Hemiptelea davidii are of scholarly value; rock maple-leaf plants and spikemoss grow on the rock faces. The area is also recognised as a habitat for wildlife, including Natural Monuments such as the Korean shiner, otter, kestrel and mandarin duck, as well as the merganser, which further adds to its value as a Scenic Site.
