Beopseongjin Wooded Fort, Yeonggwang, is the woodland of Beopseongjin Fortress, built to protect Beopseongpo, the most prosperous port in the Jeolla region, and its village. Beopseongpo has been a leading port and sea route to China and Japan since the Three Kingdoms period, and it was also the port where the yellow corvina caught in the waters off Chilsan in the West Sea came ashore. In the corvina season, fishing boats formed a pasi, a seasonal market held offshore, and so many merchants gathered there that the saying "Let's go to Beopseong, Yeonggwang, to make money" arose. The word jaengi in "Beopseongjin Sup-jaengi" means jae, that is, a fortress, so the name refers to a fortress made of woodland, which serves as a windbreak protecting the port and village. This woodland, together with Beopseongjin Fortress and the port, creates a distinctive and beautiful scene, and various folk events continue to be held here; as a place that shows both the appearance of a Joseon-period naval garrison and the glory of Beopseongjin, which flourished through its pasi, it is a scenic spot of very great historical and cultural value.
