Choyeonjeong Garden, Suncheon

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krChoyeonjeong Garden, Suncheon, refers jointly to the Choyeonjeong pavilion and the woodland surrounding it. Choyeonjeong was originally built as a thatched building in 1836, the second year of King Heonjong, by Jo Jin-chung (pen name Cheongnyuheon, 1777–1837), for use as a memorial hall of the Okcheon Jo clan; it was later rebuilt with a tiled roof in 1864, the first year of Emperor Gojong, by Jo Jin-chung's son Jo Jae-ho (pen name Manhoe, 1808–1882). Whereas most Korean pavilions are built beside scenic rivers or on hills so as to command open views, Choyeonjeong is an unusual example, set deep within a natural valley of Mohusan Mountain in Wangdae Village. A particularly distinctive feature is that at Choyeonjeong the valley itself is hidden by the forest and cannot be seen, so that only the sound of clear flowing water is heard. The natural valley of Mohusan Mountain in front of Choyeonjeong carries only a modest flow of water, but the water is clear and the place little visited, and the beautiful surrounding rock outcrops and cliffs, together with the broad-leaved trees (including hornbeams) growing attached to the rock faces, combine to show a distinctive natural beauty; the natural environment is comparatively well preserved. Choyeonjeong and the outer garden in front of it are an unusual example of a private villa built to make use of a mountain valley, retaining its traditional appearance well and thus holding great value in the history of landscape design; the surrounding natural scenery is beautiful and well preserved, giving the site great scenic value as a Scenic Site.
