Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krBaegunjeong Pavilion (a Gyeongsangbuk-do Cultural Heritage Material) was built by Kim Su-il (pen name Gwibong, 1528–1583) on land given to him by his father Kim Jin (pen name Cheonggye, 1500–1580). Standing on a bluff above the Banbyeoncheon Stream at a point where Naeap Village and Gaehosongsup Pine Grove are framed together in a single view, the pavilion offers an outstanding vantage point for experiencing the traditional Confucian cultural landscape. Naeap Village is a clan village of the Uiseong Kim lineage, where the Uiseong Kim head house and many other treasures, including old documents, and traditional houses are well preserved. It is introduced as a traditional clan village in Jeong Yak-yong's "Postscript to the Taengniji," and a painting of the village scenery titled Unjeong pungbeom survives in the Heoju sanbugun suhwacheop, also known as the Twelve Views of Banbyeoncheon, an album made by Yi Jong-ak about 300 years ago; the village thus preserves a history of more than 500 years. Gaehosongsup Pine Grove was planted by Kim Man-geun (styled Tongnyegong) around the time of King Seongjong of Joseon, to make up for a weak point in the watercourse in front of Naeap Village. It was washed away in a great flood in the 38th year of King Seonjo (1605), shortly after the Imjin War, and was replanted at the initiative of Kim Yong (pen name Uncheon). The Uiseong Kim clan is said to have protected this woodland ever since by drawing up a clan regulation called the Gaeho geumsong wanui, an agreement prohibiting the felling of the Gaeho pines. This woodland is a sugumak forest, planted to protect the farmland of Naeap Village and to remove obstacles caused by wind and water. Naeap is known to have the geomantic form of "moonlight on a gentle sandbank" or "a reclining ox chewing the cud," and the woodland was artificially planted and protected over a long history as a bibo forest, to make up for the geomantic shortcomings of this form. Baegunjeong Pavilion and Gaehosongsup Pine Grove, Andong, brings together in a single view Baegunjeong Pavilion on the far bank, Gaehosongsup, the pine grove on the crescent-shaped island in the Banbyeoncheon, Naeap Village stretched along the riverside, and the striking rocks, cliffs, and riverside woods of the Banbyeoncheon. It creates a beautiful natural landscape while also showing the appearance of a representative clan village of the Joseon period, making it a scenic spot of great historical value.
