The Old Path of Jungnyeong Pass is an ancient road of long history. The Samguk sagi records that "in the third month of the fifth year of King Adalla of Silla (158 CE), the Jungnyeong road was first opened," and the Dongguk yeoji seungnam relates that "in the fifth year of King Adalla, Jukjuk opened the Jungnyeong road and died of exhaustion in the effort, and a shrine for rites in his memory stands at the top of the pass." During the Three Kingdoms period, the Jungnyeong area lay on the border between Goguryeo and Silla and was for a long time contested territory between the two. The Samguk sagi records that in the twelfth year of King Jinheung of Silla (551 CE), Silla allied with Baekje and seized ten counties north of Jungnyeong, and that forty years later, in the first year of King Yeongyang (590 CE), the renowned Goguryeo general Ondal volunteered to lead an army out, vowing, "I will not return unless I recover the land north of Jungnyeong that we have lost." These records show how vital a strategic point this pass was at the time. Located within Sobaeksan National Park, this old road once linked Yeongju and Danyang. The valley stream running alongside the path, the long tunnel of trees overhead, and the surrounding main ridges of Sobaeksan Mountain combine to present a beautiful natural landscape, making this a notable scenic spot.
