This is a garden created by the Joseon-period poet Yun Seon-do (pen name Gosan, 1587–1671) after he was moved by the natural beauty of Bogildo Island while travelling towards Jeju Island. From the age of 51, in the fifteenth year of King Injo's reign (1637), he lived here and left behind many poems and writings, including 'Eobusasisa' (Songs of the Fisherman's Four Seasons). He built Nakseojae, dug a pond in the stream across the way to establish Goksudang, and made a small stone chamber, Dongcheonseoksil, on the hillside of the mountain opposite. To the north-east of the valley he built Seyeonjeong Pavilion, where he read books, went boating, and lived in the company of nature. This garden, set amid the beautiful natural scenery of Bogildo Island, embodies both Korea's own view of nature and the ideas of Neo-Confucianism, and Yun Seon-do's outstanding eye for beauty can be glimpsed in the way nature and people become one.
