Suncheonman Bay
순천만 · 順天灣

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krSuncheonman Bay is one of Korea's most representative coastal wetlands developed along the south coast, a scenic spot whose beautiful coastal ecological landscape combines reed fields spreading over the tidal flats, colonies of glasswort (chilmyeoncho, a salt-marsh plant), and S-shaped tidal channels. The broad tidal flats support a rich and diverse array of life, including polychaete worms, various crabs and shellfish, giving the bay great biological value. It attracts natural monuments such as the hooded crane and the black stork, together with eleven internationally rare bird species including the Eurasian spoonbill, the white-necked plover, the greenfinch, the Oriental reed warbler and the Eurasian oystercatcher, as well as around two hundred bird species in all. In particular, the sunset viewed from the observatory and the spectacle of migratory birds rising in flocks are magnificent, and in 2006 the bay was selected by the Korea Tourism Organization as its finest site for viewing scenery, reflecting its outstanding scenic value.
