Dodamsambong Peaks, Danyang
단양 도담삼봉 · 丹陽 島潭三峰

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr"Dodamsambong Peaks, Danyang" is spectacular and unique in appearance, ranked as the foremost of the Eight Scenic Views of Danyang. Many scholars and painters left poems and paintings here, including Yi Hwang, who served as magistrate of Danyang, along with Hwang Jun-ryang, Hong I-sang, Kim Jeong-hui, Kim Hong-do and Yi Bang-un. A legend concerning the birth of Jeong Do-jeon, a founding meritorious subject of the Joseon dynasty, has been handed down here; one account even holds that Jeong Do-jeon loved this place so much that he took "Sambong" (Three Peaks) as his own pen name. Dodamsambong consists of cone-shaped peaks formed by limestone karst topography. In a deep pool created where the Namhan River bends, three peaks rise dramatically around the large, tall Janggunbong Peak at the centre; their strange and beautiful forms, set against the river, create outstanding scenery.
