A rock atop the cliff resembles a turtle, and so the peak is known as Gudambong (龜潭峰), "Turtle Pool Peak." On the Janghoenaru Ferry side of Gudambong lies the grave of Duhyang, a gisaeng who admired the scholar Yi Hwang (pen name Toegye). Many stories attach to this scenic spot, including the legend that Ju Jibeon, known in the reign of King Injong of Joseon as the "white-robed minister," retired to his home region and was called an immortal for riding kudzu vines slung between the two peaks of Gudambong. Gudambong is formed of towering, sheer and majestic rock cliffs unfolding along the course of the Namhan River, embraced by Jebibong Peak and Geumsusan Mountain and, further off, by Woraksan Mountain. Yi Hwang, Yi I, Kim Man-jung and many other scholars and men of letters praised its superb scenery, and it remains, even today, the most beautiful sight to be seen from a boat on Chungju Lake.
