Seonunsan Mountain was also called Dosolsan, meaning "Mountain of Tusita". Seonun means "meditating amid the clouds", while Dosol refers to Dosolcheongung, the palace of Tusita Heaven where the Maitreya Buddha resides; both names, Seonunsan and Dosolsan, thus mean "a mountain for cultivating the Buddhist way". Dosolgyegok Valley is the finest scenery in the Seonunsan area. Rocks formed by volcanic activity form massive vertical cliffs, creating a magnificent natural landscape. The area also contains Buddhist-related cultural heritage - the Naewongung shrine of Dosolcheon, Dosoram Hermitage, Nahanjeon Hall and a rock-carved Buddha - together with its natural heritage, giving it great value as both cultural and natural heritage.
