Song Byeong-seon (pen name Yeonjae), a scholar of the reign of Emperor Gojong, fell in love with the beautiful scenery of this place and withdrew here in seclusion, building a pavilion called Seobyeokjeong, where he trained the next generation of scholars and wandered at leisure. The name Ilsadae is said to have originated when the scholars of this region called Song Byeong-seon "Dongbang-ilsa", meaning "the only scholar in the East", and named the site "Ilsadae" (Terrace of the One Scholar) after the clean, dignified character of its blue-green rocks. Ilsadae, the sixth scenic spot of Gucheondong Valley, is a cliff formed by the erosive action of the winding Wondangcheon Stream. To the west of Seobyeokjeong stands a striking crag shaped like a ship's mast, making for a spectacular view.
