Cheongamjeong Pavilion and Seokcheongyegok Valley, Bonghwa
봉화 청암정과 석천계곡 · 奉化 靑巖亭과 石泉溪谷

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krCheongamjeong Pavilion was built in 1526, the 21st year of King Jungjong, by Gwon Beol (1478–1548, pen name Chungjae) on top of a rock; water was made to encircle it and a stone bridge laid across, so that it takes on the appearance of an island. Seokcheonjeong Pavilion was built by Gwon Beol's son, Gwon Dong-bo (1518–1592, pen name Cheongam), carrying on his father's wishes, in the Seokcheongyegok Valley, an area of outstanding scenery near Yugok Village. Yugok Village is where Gwon Beol settled in 1520, the 15th year of King Jungjong. The village's shape is said to resemble a golden hen brooding over her eggs — a topography known as geumgyeporanhyeong — and so it came to be called Dakssil ("Hen's Nest") Village. In the late Joseon period the Silhak scholar Yi Jung-hwan, in his Taengniji, praised Cheongamjeong and the surrounding Yugok Village as an exemplary settlement beside a stream. The area around Cheongamjeong Pavilion and Seokcheongyegok Valley is the village's representative scenery, an outstanding scenic spot in harmony with its natural surroundings — dense pine forests, mountain streams and beautiful rock formations.
