Baegaksan Mountain is the northern principal mountain of Hanyang, corresponding to the Bukhyeonmu, the guardian of the north in traditional geomancy, and it embodies the ideas and topographical principles by which the Joseon Dynasty chose the site of its capital. It is a natural heritage in which fine scenery and cultural elements are combined. It preserves well its value as a historical site giving concrete form to the systematic principles of capital planning in Seoul, the old capital, and to the ideological system symbolised by feng shui. As the rear garden of Gyeongbokgung Palace, the principal royal palace, it also retains the principles of Joseon-period landscape design centred on pine trees, making it a scenic spot of outstanding historical and cultural value.
