Jijok Strait is a narrow channel through which fierce currents flow at 13–15 km/h. Fishing in this area, whose representative catch is anchovy, follows a distinctive method known as jukbangnyeom, and with 23 jukbangnyeom facilities currently installed, the strait offers an excellent picture of Korea's traditional fishing landscape. The name jukbangnyeom comes from the practice of setting up standing bamboo fences and nets to catch fish; it is also called a bamboo fish weir. It is a traditional fish trap that makes use of the tides: fish that swim in with the current are enclosed and then taken out as needed. Fish caught here are prized as the finest sashimi, and because fish living in fast-moving water develop greater firmness in their flesh, their taste is exceptional.
