Daegwallyeong is a place whose name has been recorded in historical records since the Three Kingdoms period. The Old Path of Daegwallyeong Pass has long served as a trade and transport route linking the Yeongdong and Yeongseo regions, and for the people of Yeongdong it has been both a gateway and the jinsan, or guardian mountain, of Gangneung. Since the Goryeo and Joseon periods the Old Path of Daegwallyeong Pass has served not only as a major transport route but also as a place bound up with the joys and sorrows of the many ordinary people who travelled it over the centuries. It is also deeply connected with the Gangneung Danoje festival, inscribed as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, and together with the fine natural scenery of Daegwallyeong itself, a major pass on the Baekdudaegan mountain range, it preserves the original form of the surrounding valleys and the old trail remarkably well.
