Seondol stands on a cliff beside the Seogang River in Bangjeol-ri, Yeongwol, its rock face looking as though it had been split apart by a great sword. This standing stone, about 70 metres high, is also known as Sinseonam, meaning "Rock of the Immortals", and together with the blue river water and layered cliffs it forms a beautiful scene. The site carries a legend that King Danjong, resting here on his way to Cheongnyeongpo, a Scenic Site in Yeongwol, saw the rock standing tall and thought it looked just like an immortal, and so it came to be called Seondol, meaning "standing stone".
