Sanbangsan Mountain is an oval, dome-shaped volcano that rises abruptly from the flat terrain of south-western Jeju. Together with Hallasan Mountain and Seongsan Ilchulbong Tuff Cone, it is known as one of Jeju's three great mountains. It is regarded as a sacred mountain with a mysterious atmosphere, said to bring rain whenever cloud wraps around it, and legend tells that it was formed when the Jade Emperor pulled the peak from Hallasan Mountain and threw it here. On the south-western slope of Sanbangsan Mountain is Sanbanggul, a cave hollowed deep into the rock face; the view of Yongmeori Coast and of the sunset seen from this cave is especially fine. To protect this natural-heritage Scenic Site, the area is designated and managed as a restricted-access zone. Anyone wishing to enter for management, academic or similar purposes must obtain permission from the Administrator of the Korea Heritage Service.
