Ullimsanbang Villa and Garden, Jindo brings together natural and historical-cultural heritage of outstanding value: Cheomchalsan Mountain, home to the broad, dense evergreen forest of Ssanggyesa Temple (a natural monument), and Ullimsanbang itself, a renowned site famed as the birthplace of the Namdo (southern) tradition of Korean ink painting. The site is a scenic spot of exceptional historical and landscape value. Ullimsanbang was created by Heo Ryeon, pen name Sochi, a master of Namjong (Southern School) painting in the late Joseon period, who lived there in his later years while producing his art and writings. According to the Sochi Sillok, he laid out a large garden there and planted beautiful flowers and rare trees, creating a scene like an immortal's paradise.
