Yeongsilgiam is one of the places that best represents Hallasan Mountain and one of the Twelve Scenic Wonders of Yeongju, an old poetic name for Jeju Island. Its dense forest combines with beautiful scenery in every season - spring blossom, summer greenery, autumn foliage and winter snow - to produce an outstanding view. On the south-western slope below the summit of Hallasan Mountain, sheer, fantastically shaped rocks rise into the sky. Because the place resembles the sacred mountain where Shakyamuni Buddha preached the dharma, it came to be called Yeongsil, meaning "Spirit Chamber". Here stand rows of Byeongpungbawi and the statues known as Obaengnahan, also called Obaekjanggun. Byeongpungbawi, "Screen Rock", is so called because the rows of fantastic rocks stand lined up like a folding screen. Obaengnahan, the "Five Hundred Arhats" (also "Five Hundred Generals"), takes its name because the oddly and strangely shaped rocks rising into the sky look, depending on the angle from which they are viewed, like generals or like arhats.
