Geoyeonjeong Pavilion was built in 1872, the ninth year of Emperor Gojong, by Jeon Jae-taek and other descendants of Jeon Si-seo (pen name Hwarimjae), on a site to the west of where Jeon Si-seo had once lived in seclusion. It is a two-storey pavilion building with three bays across the front and two bays to the side. The name Geoyeon is taken from the line "geoyeon a cheonseok" in Zhu Xi's twelve-poem series "Miscellaneous Chants at the Study" (Jeongsa Japyeong), meaning that by building a retreat amid beautiful mountains and waters and dwelling there, one comes to possess the fine scenery all around. In his "Record of Geoyeonjeong," Im Heon-hoe (1811–1876) praised the pavilion's scenery highly, writing that among the scenic spots of Yeongnam, the Samdong valleys (Anuisamdong, the three valleys of Anui) are the finest; among the scenic spots of Samdong, Hwarimdong is the finest; and among the scenic spots of Hwarimdong, this pavilion is the finest. Geoyeonjeong Pavilion and its surroundings in Hwarimdong, Hamyang, form a scenic site that harmonises the curiously shaped granite bedrock nearby, a broad valley and flowing stream water, making it representative of a dongcheon landscape, a secluded valley celebrated as an idyllic retreat.
