Imdaejeong Garden, Hwasun
화순 임대정 원림 · 和順 臨對亭 園林

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krImdaejeong is a pavilion built in 1862, the 13th year of King Cheoljong's reign, by Min Ju-hyeon (pen name Saae, 1808–1882), on the old site of Suryundae in Gobanwon, a garden created in the late 16th century by Nam Eon-gi (pen name Goban). The name "Imdae" was taken from a line in the poem "Lianxi" by the Song-dynasty poet Zeng Ji (1019–1083): "At dawn, facing the water, I look towards Mount Lu." Imdaejeong was originally built as a single-bay thatched pavilion, which later fell into ruin; in 1922 Min Ju-hyeon's grandson Min Dae-ho (1860–1932) and others rebuilt it, adding two further bays and a tiled roof to complete the pavilion's present form. Imdaejeong Garden, Hwasun is a scenic site in which the pavilion, built on bare rock, and the garden's three ponds — Sangji (the upper pond), Haji (the lower pond) and Bangji (the square pond) — blend harmoniously with the surrounding natural landscape.
