Baengnokdam on Hallasan Mountain is the highest summit crater lake in South Korea; almost unaffected by erosion, it preserves the original form of the shield volcano well, giving it great scholarly value, and it is a volcanic landform of outstanding scenery. Snow that accumulates in midwinter remains at Baengnokdam until summer, a phenomenon known as "Nokdam mansseol" (late snow at the deer pond), one of the Twelve Scenic Views of Yeongju, giving it exceptional value as a natural landscape. The name Baengnokdam, meaning "white deer pond," is said to derive from the many white deer that once played at the summit of Hallasan Mountain. Old documents referring to Baengnokdam include "Byeoldojin" and "Account of a Journey to Hallasan Mountain," both found in the Collected Works of Master Myeonam (Myeonam Seonsaeng Munjip) by Choe Ik-hyeon.
