Seonjakjiwat on Hallasan Mountain is widely covered with low shrubs, including downy rhododendron and royal azalea; from April to June the pale pink of the rhododendron and the deep pink of the azalea blanket the entire area, creating the marvellous spectacle of a mountaintop flower garden, while the scene, set against the snow-covered summit of Hallasan Mountain, forms an almost otherworldly landscape of outstanding natural value. The wider Hallasan Mountain area has been inscribed as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site and designated a Biosphere Reserve, and it is also designated a natural monument as the Hallasan Nature Reserve. Seonjakjiwat is a plain within the grassland of the Hallasan highlands, extending from above Yeongsilgiam, the strange rock formations of Yeongsil, to Wisseoreum peak; the name Seonjakjiwat means "a field where small stones stand upright." Extensive colonies of royal azalea, downy rhododendron, creeping juniper and crowberry have developed here, and below Nueunoreum there is Norusaem, a spring that flows year-round. Around it lies a highland wetland where thyme, white shade gentian, snow primrose, cloud lousewort and other plants grow, making it an area of great ecological value. The site meets the criteria for Scenic Site designation covering mountains, hills and volcanic terrain of outstanding natural scenery, and areas that are noted plant habitats. It also corresponds to a natural heritage site under the Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, possessing distinct value for its natural beauty.
