Hwajeogyeon Pool, Pocheon
포천 화적연 · 抱川 禾積淵

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krHwajeogyeon is a rock formation set within the beautiful terrain where the Hantangang River bends, its waters and natural vegetation combining to form a spectacular scene. A deep pool has formed where the stream curves round, and a huge granite rock rises some 13 m above the water's surface; dark basalt cliffs, pale-coloured columnar rock and deep blue water all come together here. Hwajeogyeon also has considerable geomorphological value: visitors can observe a variety of landforms, including the basalt layer overlying the Daebo Granite (granite from the Cretaceous period of the Mesozoic era), basalt columnar joints, granite bedrock, and abundant sand and gravel carried down from upstream. Together these elements have shaped the bend in the river, and over many summers the great volume of floodwater has ground away at the huge rock to form the Hwajeogyeon seen today. Since ancient times its waters have never dried up, and records of rain-prayer rituals held here appear in the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty; many classical poems (by Bak Se-dang, Bak Sun, Hong Yang-ho, Yi Hang-no, Yi Byeong-yeon and others) and "true-view landscape paintings" — a genre portraying actual Korean scenery rather than imagined ideal landscapes — by Jeong Seon, Yi Yun-yeong, Jeong Su-yeong and others have also been passed down.
