Meonguri Gorge of Hantangang River, Pocheon

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krMeonguri Gorge on the Hantangang River in Pocheon shows a beautiful landscape shaped by well-developed columnar joints along the riverbank. Unlike most other gorges along the Hantangang River, the Meonguri columnar joints form a gorge in which both banks of the river-eroded cliffs consist entirely of columnar joints; the cliffs are about 20 to 30 m high, and the gorge extends for around 4 km. Within the gorge, more than about thirty small river-erosion caves have formed as a result of the erosion and exfoliation of the columnar joints. In Meonguri Gorge, visitors can observe the unconformity between Precambrian metamorphic rocks and the overlying Quaternary basaltic lava, columnar joints (joints that develop when hot molten lava cools and solidifies, contracting in volume to form parallel rows of rock pillars), river-eroded cliffs (high cliffs formed by the erosive action of a river), and the process by which a palaeosol layer developed, giving the site outstanding geological and geomorphological value. The columnar-joint gorge extends for about 4 km, and its scenery is striking enough to be likened to a "Korean Grand Canyon."
