Biseondae Flat Rock and Cheonbuldonggyegok Valley in Seoraksan Mountain
설악산 비선대와 천불동계곡 일원 · 雪嶽山 飛仙臺와 千佛洞溪谷 一圓

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krBiseondae Flat Rock takes its name from the story that Magoseon, a Taoist immortal who had been enjoying himself at Waseondae Rock, came to this spot and ascended to heaven. It has long been visited by poets and literati who came to appreciate the subtle workings of nature, and many characters are carved into its bedrock, the most notable being 飛仙臺 ("Biseondae"), which the Yangyang Eupji (Yangyang Gazetteer) records as having been written by Yun Sun. A natural rock cave 18m long, opening partway up Mireukbong Peak behind Biseondae, is called Geumgang-gul (Vajra Cave), where Master Wonhyo is said to have practised austerities in ancient times. The stream flowing down through Cheonbuldonggyegok Valley winds this way and that, forming small waterfalls, and creates scenery no less fine than Manpokdong Valley in Geumgangsan Mountain, making it one of Seoraksan Mountain's foremost scenic sites. Cheonbuldonggyegok Valley runs for 7km from Biseondae up to Daecheongbong Peak, and, as though concentrating the mountain beauty of Seoraksan Mountain in a single place, one splendid sight follows another along its length — Waseondae Rock, Biseondae, Munjudam Pool, Ihodam Pool, Gwimyeonam Rock, Oryeonpokpo Falls, Yangpokpo Falls and Cheondangpokpo Falls among them — giving the valley outstanding scenic value. The name Cheonbuldong (Valley of a Thousand Buddhas) is taken from Cheonbulpokpo Falls; it was given because the thousand peaks and countless rocks, and the clear water and jade-like pools, spread throughout the valley seem to embody the wondrous sight of "a thousand Buddhas." Made up of innumerable rocks and rock peaks, the valley is extraordinary, gathering the finest scenery under heaven into one place and forming the pinnacle of mountain beauty. Together with Chilseon Valley in Jirisan Mountain and Tamna Valley in Hallasan Mountain, it is considered one of Korea's three great valleys. Seorak-ilgi by Kim Chang-heup and Yuseorak-rok by Kim Mong-hwa both lavish praise on the scenery around Biseondae in Seoraksan Mountain.
