Starting from the sarira pagoda, a stupa enshrining Buddhist relics, at Bongjeongam Hermitage, a mysterious landscape unfolds: to the east lie Gayadonggyegok Valley, Mangyeongdae and Gongnyong Ridge, while to the west, alongside Suryeomdonggyegok and Gugokdamgyegok valleys, the main north-western ridge stretches out, grand and magnificent. Lying at the heart of Naeseorak, Yongajangseong Ridge consists of a long line of sharp rock peaks, like a dragon's teeth, forming a wall as if it were a fortress; some twenty large and small rock peaks rise up like a dragon's fangs. When a sea of cloud wraps around the peaks, Yongajangseong presents a mysterious and marvellous hidden scene, as if immortals were descending on the clouds, and when the autumn leaves turn vivid red and yellow, the ridge reveals an even more spectacular hidden landscape.
