Yongyeongyegok Valley, Gangneung
강릉 용연계곡 일원 · 江陵 龍淵溪谷 一圓

Yongyeongyegok, located in Sagimak-ri, Sacheon-myeon, Gangneung, is a valley formed along the Sacheoncheon Stream between Ungyebong Peak (530 m) and Cheonmabong Peak (1,015 m) on the flank of Hwangbyeongsan Mountain; it runs for a total length of about 6 km. The valley is a place where granite landforms shaped by the erosion, transport and deposition of the stream, together with weathering, are well developed; a succession of river landforms and rocky and pebbly stream beds, including small waterfalls, plunge pools, deep pools and pools, combine with the dense surrounding forest to create very beautiful natural scenery, giving the valley outstanding geological and geomorphological value. The valley extends about 6 km from its lower to its upper reaches, and at its uppermost point stands the beautiful two-tiered Yangjipokpo Falls, about 20 m high, which forms the scenic climax of the valley. The many pools and waterfalls that continue on towards the lower reaches display the valley's beautiful natural scenery, and in autumn the clear green water flowing ceaselessly over the valley's rock bed combines with the deeply coloured foliage around it to produce a very beautiful sight. The area around Yongyeongyegok also contains Yongyeonsa Temple, said to have been founded by the Silla-period monk Jajang; the Buddhist culture of Yongyeonsa, the traditional village ritual held at Yongso, the dragon pool of Yongyeongyegok, and the ceramic-making culture of the Sagimak-ri area are also elements of great historical and cultural value here.
