Gyeongpodae Pavilion and Gyeongpoho Lagoon, Gangneung
강릉 경포대와 경포호 · 江陵 鏡浦臺와 鏡浦湖

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krGyeongpodae Pavilion, one of the Eight Scenic Wonders of Gwandong, was built in 1326, the thirteenth year of King Chungsuk of Goryeo, by Park Suk, who held the official post of jijungchubusa. At the time of its construction, earlier foundation stones and long dressed stones were already found on the site, indicating that a pavilion-type building had stood there even before. Records of pavilions in the Gangneung region also mention Imhaejeong Pavilion, linked to Sunjeonggong during the reign of King Seongdeok of Silla, and Hansongjeong Pavilion, linked to the hwarang youth group led by Sullang, showing that the tradition of pavilion culture in this region, including Gyeongpodae, has long been established. In his Gwandong byeolgok, Jeong Cheol (1536–1593) named Gyeongpodae the foremost of the Eight Scenic Wonders of Gwandong, singing that when moonlight falls in the evening, five moons can be seen — in the sky, the sea, the lake, a wine cup, and the eyes of one's beloved — making it also the finest spot on the Donghae coast for moon-viewing.
