Hwayanggugok extends for 3 km along the Hwayangcheon Stream within Songnisan National Park, running upstream from the first valley, Gyeongcheonbyeok, to the ninth, Pagot; the scenery of the nine valleys is well preserved, and each individual view holds value as a beautiful scenic spot. The nine valleys are said to have been designated in Hwayang Valley, where Song Si-yeol (pen name Uam) had resided, by his disciple Gwon Sang-ha (pen name Suam) after Song's death, with the names later carved into the rock by Min Jin-won (pen name Danam). The first valley is Gyeongcheonbyeok, the second Unyeongdam, the third Eupgungam, the fourth Geumsadam, the fifth Cheomseongdae, the sixth Neungundae, the seventh Waryongam, the eighth Haksodae, and the ninth Pagot.
