Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krOsan, known for its natural beauty, is described in the Bongseongji (published by Gurye Hyanggyo, the local Confucian school, in 1800) as follows: 'the shape of its rocks is so outstanding that it resembles Geumgangsan Mountain, and it has long been called So-geumgang (Little Geumgangsan).' Saseongam Hermitage is a temple built on the sheer rock face at the summit of Osan. It was founded by Master Yeongi in 544, the twenty-second year of King Seong of Baekje, and was originally called Osanam Hermitage; it is said to have come to be known as Saseongam ('Hermitage of the Four Sages') after four eminent monks — Uisang, Wonhyo, Doseon and State Preceptor Jingak — practised austerities there. The temple and the rocks at the summit of Osan blend together in exquisite harmony, and the site is also an excellent viewpoint, from which one can take in, all at once, the Seomjingang River winding past Gurye-eup and the peaks of the Jirisan range.
