Baegundong Garden in Gangjin has long been a renowned scenic spot; the garden itself is a byeolseo, a private retreat garden, built before 1678 by Yi Dam-ro (b. 1627). It was passed down through his descendants, and the Baeguncheop (White Cloud Album) preserves both the 'Twelve Scenic Views of Baegundong' poems by Jeong Yak-yong (pen name Dasan, 1762–1836) and the painting 'Picture of Baegundong' by the monk Choui (1786–1866), which together give a sense of the garden's original appearance. Numerous documentary records also confirm that the garden was laid out with Wolchulsan Mountain as its backdrop, and its landscaping techniques — including a yusanggoksu, a winding water channel used for floating wine cups, and the planting of trees — are of high quality, with the elements of the Twelve Scenic Views of Baegundong well preserved. Old poems and paintings in which many scholars and literati praised the garden's scenery have survived well to the present day, giving it outstanding value in the history of garden design, and records remain of Yi Si-heon (1803–1860), Yi Dam-ro's sixth-generation descendant, making and enjoying tea while corresponding with Jeong Yak-yong and the monk Choui, adding further value as a cradle of Korea's tea culture.
