Oriental arborvitae grows in China and Korea; within Korea it is found in areas such as Daegu, Danyang, Andong and Yeongyang. It often takes root in cliff rock faces to form forests, and is widely planted around houses and villages to beautify the surrounding environment. The Forest of Oriental Arborvitae in Do-dong, Daegu, consists of about 700 trees, each around 5–7 m tall, growing on a cliff face, together with pine and zelkova trees growing alongside them. The surrounding forest was degraded as people cut down trees indiscriminately, but the arborvitae, growing in crevices in the cliff rock, escaped felling and has survived intact. At the time of its designation, this area belonged to Dalseong, so the forest was called the 'Arborvitae Forest of Dalseong'. Oriental arborvitae had also been thought to grow only in China, so the discovery that it grows in Korea too gave it high academic value for the study of plant distribution, and it has been designated and protected as a Natural Monument. To protect the forest, the area is currently designated as restricted to public access, and entry for management or academic purposes requires the permission of the Administrator of the Korea Heritage Service.
