Lacebark Pine of Jae-dong, Seoul
서울 재동 백송 · 서울 齋洞 白松

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe lacebark pine sheds its bark in broad flakes, revealing a whitish surface underneath, which is why it is also known as the "white-bone pine". Native to China, it was brought to Korea and planted by envoys who travelled between the two countries during the Joseon period. The Jae-dong lacebark pine is estimated to be about 600 years old. It stands 17 m tall, and its trunk, which splits into two, measures 2.6 m and 2.0 m in girth at breast height respectively, making it larger than other lacebark pines. Supports have been erected to hold up the trunk, and the tree is in good condition overall. The land around it was formerly the grounds of Changdeok Girls' High School, but the Constitutional Court now stands there. The lacebark pine of Jae-dong, Seoul, is a rare pine seldom seen elsewhere. Having lived for centuries under the care and attention of past generations, and holding great value as biological material, it has been designated and protected as a natural monument.
