Natural Habitat of Poison Bulbs on Tokkiseom Island, Jeju
KOGL Type 4Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

The poison bulb is found in Japan, China, India, Malaysia, and Korea. Because it grows only where the annual average temperature is around 15°C and the minimum temperature is -3.5°C or above, in Korea it grows naturally only on Tokkiseom Island, Jeju. Its white flowers bloom from July to September, opening fully at night and giving off a strong fragrance. The natural habitat of poison bulbs lies on Tokkiseom Island, about 50 m off the coast of Hado-ri. The island is ringed by rocks, and a colony of poison bulbs has formed on the sandy ground within. This habitat was once heavily damaged, but through people's efforts poison bulbs now grow densely across most of the area. The natural habitat of poison bulbs on Tokkiseom Island, Jeju, is Korea's only natural habitat of the plant and, being the northernmost limit of its distribution given the climate, holds high academic value; it is accordingly designated and protected as a Natural Monument.
