남해 미조리 상록수림 · 南海 彌助里 常綠樹林

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe evergreen forest of Mijo-ri has formed on a hillside facing the sea in front of the village. The forest is made up of evergreen broadleaf trees rarely found elsewhere — Machilus thunbergii, Actinodaphne lancifolia, Cinnamomum yabunikkei, a holly (Ilex integra), Cleyera japonica, a chinquapin (Castanopsis cuspidata), Japanese spindle, Aucuba japonica, Pittosporum tobira, Eurya japonica, wax-leaf privet, Fatsia japonica, and Ardisia japonica — together with evergreen vines such as Elaeagnus glabra, a climbing fig (Ficus sarmentosa var. nipponica), and Korean ivy; deciduous broadleaf trees including zelkova, hackberry, Cornus walteri, Carpinus turczaninowii, a wild pear (Pyrus ussuriensis), Euodia daniellii, Chionanthus retusus, an ash (Fraxinus sieboldiana), Styrax japonicus, Platycarya strobilacea, Korean mountain ash, Chinese elm, Konara oak, Mallotus japonicus, Lespedeza maximowiczii, spicebush, multiflora rose, Elaeagnus umbellata, a fig (Ficus erecta), Japanese beautyberry, border privet, Chinese sumac, Rhus sylvestris, Pourthiaea villosa, burning bush, Clerodendrum trichotomum, and Japanese pepper; and deciduous vines such as Paederia scandens, Cocculus trilobus, kudzu, and Ampelopsis glandulosa. There is a legend that when this forest grows thick and lush, the village will produce outstanding talents, and for this reason it has long been carefully protected. The evergreen forest of Mijo-ri, Namhae, also serves as a windbreak against strong sea winds and, by providing a suitable environment for fish, functions as an eobureom — a forest that draws in shoals of fish. For these reasons it has been designated and protected as a Natural Monument.
