Evergreen Forest of Yesong-ri, Wando
완도 예송리 상록수림 · 莞島 禮松里 常綠樹林

The evergreen forest of Yesong-ri lies on the south-eastern coast of Bogildo Island. Created about 300 years ago by local residents as protection against typhoons, it is a strikingly beautiful, crescent-shaped forest some 740m long and about 30m wide. The forest is made up of species including Machilus thunbergii, two kinds of chinquapin (Castanopsis cuspidata var. sieboldii and Castanopsis sieboldii), evergreen oaks such as Quercus salicina, Quercus acuta and Quercus glauca, Cinnamomum japonicum, camellia (Camellia japonica), Litsea japonica, Eurya emarginata, insular boxwood, ivy, hackberry (Celtis sinensis), Japanese beautyberry (Callicarpa japonica), Cudrania tricuspidata, multiflora rose, Clerodendrum trichotomum, Quercus serrata, and Sageretia thea. The evergreen forest of Yesong-ri, Wando, is highly important, serving not only as a windbreak that shields the village and its farmland from strong sea winds but also as a fish-gathering forest, providing conditions suitable for fish to live in and so drawing shoals close to shore. It carries not only cultural value, showing the ancestors' wisdom in working with nature, but also great biological value, and it is designated and protected as a natural monument.
