The insular cotoneaster and insular abelia are low shrubs that branch profusely from the base, with leaves that emerge in spring and fall in autumn. The insular cotoneaster belongs to the rose family, bears white flowers in May and June, and grows to nearly 1.5 metres in height. The insular abelia belongs to the honeysuckle family, bears pale yellow flowers in May, and grows to about 1 metre in height. These shrubs grow along the rocky cliff slopes of the hill behind Dodong, and the very steep gradient of the cliff has helped them survive well preserved. The Population of Cotoneaster and Insular Abelia in Dodong, Ulleung, consists of rare plants that grow naturally only on Ulleungdo Island. For this reason it has been designated and protected as a natural monument.
