Ulleung gukhwa is a perennial herb, a type of wild chrysanthemum, which flowers in September and October. Island thyme is a low-growing shrub that branches heavily from its base, its leaves appearing in spring and falling in autumn; it is named "baengnihyang" (hundred-ri fragrance) because its floral scent is said to carry a hundred ri. The population of Ulleung gukhwa and island thyme in Naridong lies on the slope rising from Nari Basin, a former volcanic crater, toward Seonginbong Peak. Since both plants dislike shade, they form small colonies in open areas free of forest cover. Both give off a strong fragrance when in bloom, though the island thyme's scent is faint by day and grows strong at night. Because Ulleung gukhwa and island thyme are endemic to Ulleungdo Island and recognised for their rarity, the population in Naridong, Ulleung, is designated and protected as a natural monument.
