The Ginkgo Tree of Munmyo Confucian Shrine, Seoul, is estimated to be about 400 years old. It is a magnificent tree, standing 26 metres tall with a trunk girth of 12.09 metres at chest height, notable for its vigorous branch growth and for its well-developed yuju, nipple-like aerial roots that form on old ginkgo trees. It stands within the grounds of Myeongnyundang, the lecture hall of Munmyo Confucian Shrine near Seonggyungwan University, and is thought to have been planted together with the shrine when it was rebuilt in 1602, after the original had burned down during the Japanese invasions of 1592. This tree has lived for centuries under the care and attention of past generations, and its high value as both a biological and cultural resource has led to its designation and protection as a natural monument.
